Historically, many people have sought plastic surgery to achieve dramatic transformations. The results are only part of the picture, as having work done can often be seen as a status symbol in itself. However, Montreal-based plastic surgeon Dr. Hani Sinno says that the tide is changing, and more patients than ever are looking for beautifully subtle results.

What’s driving the change? In Dr. Sinno’s experience, media trends have always shaped patient preferences, and this time around is no different.

“Desired results for patients are always aligned with what's trending in the media,” he says. “In the last few years, we’ve seen the rise of the ‘clean girl’ era, which emphasizes a more minimalist look.”

As much as the media helps patients identify the kind of look they’re going for, it also serves as a cautionary tale.

“With social media, it’s also easy to see the ‘bad apples’ that stick out,” Dr. Sinno explains. “It creates an awareness around being more selective with who you trust your face with and what procedures to do.”

The current emphasis on natural results may actually stem from the overlap of two other cultural trends: a growing focus on “quiet luxury” and the rise of regenerative medicine.

Many affluent patients aren’t looking to advertise their wealth, and people are increasingly focused on looking and feeling younger. Most of Dr. Sinno’s clients are simply hoping to look like renewed, healthier versions of themselves.

It takes a masterful plastic surgeon to create subtle enhancements that improve a patient’s appearance without making it obvious that they’ve had work done. Naturally, one might wonder what specific techniques surgeons like Dr. Sinno use to avoid making patients look “overdone.”

“I don’t think it’s a specific technique,” he says. “I think it’s the overall skill to be able to use the tools in your toolbox to deliver what the patient wants.”

He goes on to articulate that sometimes, that means choosing a non-surgical or minimally invasive procedure. For instance, facelifts are a common choice for older patients. This procedure usually involves removing excess facial skin and lifting the remaining skin to create a tighter, more youthful look.

Dr. Sinno notes that for some patients, a fat transfer offers a better way to get similar results. Instead of lifting the skin and removing any excess like a facelift, a fat transfer restores volume and decreases sagging by injecting fat grafts into the face. It entails less scarring, pain, and downtime while giving patients the youthful look they want.

Dr. Sinno notes that he doesn’t always avoid more involved procedures. However, he approaches plastic surgery with a philosophy of “natural results, small scars, fast recovery.”

Today’s plastic surgery seekers aren’t trying to use procedures to erase their individuality or attain a uniform look. Instead, they’re trying to move forward into the next chapter with confidence and authenticity. Through skilled, personalized surgical interventions, Dr. Hani Sinno is helping them get there.
