Ricky Martin made history at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, becoming the first recipient of the brand-new Latin Icon Award.
The Puerto Rican superstar, known worldwide for his electrifying performances and groundbreaking crossover success, was recognized for his decades-long contribution to Latin music and global pop culture.
A Career-Spanning Tribute
Before accepting his award, Martin delivered a high-energy medley of some of his most iconic hits, reminding the audience why he has been a trailblazer for Latin artists across generations.
“This is for you all,” Martin said in his acceptance speech. “Thank you so much for your applause. I am addicted to your applause. That’s why I keep coming back. It’s you, not only here in America, but all over the world.”
“We Just Want to Unite Countries”
Reflecting on his 40-year career, Martin shared the deeper purpose behind his music. “We just want to unite countries. We just want to break boundaries and we just want to keep music alive,” he said.
He dedicated the award to his children, adding: “Everything I do, I do it with you in my mind and in my heart.”
